COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Criminology and Counselling degree provides an integrated study of crime, justice, and human behaviour alongside the development of professional counselling skills, preparing students for careers in criminal justice, social care, and mental health support. In the first year, students establish a strong foundation through modules such as Understanding Criminology, Contemporary Challenges in Crime and Society, Criminal Justice and Human Rights, Social Justice in Action, Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Approaches, and Therapy, Ethics and Human Rights. These modules introduce students to criminological theory, social justice, and core counselling principles. The second year builds on this knowledge, developing advanced analytical and research skills through Theoretical Criminology and Research Problems and Methods, while Intermediate Counselling Skills 1 and 2 enhance practical counselling abilities. Students can also tailor their studies with optional modules in areas such as Critical Victimology, Policing, Environmental Justice, or language study. In the final year, students complete either a Dissertation or Work: Practice and Reflection and select optional modules across both disciplines. Criminology options include Crime, Society and Racialisation, Probation and Rehabilitation, and Gender, Crime and Criminal Justice, while counselling options include Counselling and Mental Health, Bereavement and Loss, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, and Expressive Therapies. This flexible structure ensures graduates are equipped with a combination of theoretical understanding, research proficiency, and practical counselling skills for diverse professional roles.
