COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Criminology and Sociology degree offers an integrated approach to understanding society, crime, and social justice. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through core modules such as Understanding Criminology, Thinking Sociologically, Culture, Power and Deviance, Criminal Justice and Human Rights, Contemporary Challenges in Crime and Society, and Social Justice in Action, exploring the causes of crime, social inequality, and the workings of criminal justice systems. The second year emphasizes research skills and theoretical understanding through modules including Research Problems and Methods: Making it Count, Research Problems and Methods: Qualitatively Better, Theoretical Criminology, and Understanding the Social World. Students can tailor their studies by choosing optional modules such as Critical Victimology, Environmental Justice, Internet, Risk and Security, or Critical Perspectives on Policing, with the option to study a language. The final year focuses on independent research and professional practice, with a core Dissertation and Work: Practice and Reflection module. Students further specialize by selecting optional modules such as Crime, Society and Racialisation, Gender, Crime and Criminal Justice, Prisons and Punishment, or Digital Society. This flexible structure equips students with analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, preparing them for careers in criminology, social research, policy, justice, and community-focused professions.
