COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Counselling degree provides a comprehensive and structured pathway toward becoming a skilled, ethical, and reflective professional counsellor. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules such as Counselling and Communication Skills, Counselling and Psychotherapy Skills, and Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Approaches, developing an understanding of core theories and techniques. Modules like Introduction to Counselling, Philosophy and Research, Mindfulness and Wellbeing, and Therapy, Ethics and Human Rights encourage self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and ethical understanding. In the second year, the focus shifts toward applying knowledge in practice through modules such as Personal and Professional Development 1, Professional Counselling and Psychotherapy Skills, and Preparation for Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice. Students also engage with ethics, supervision, and reflective research to deepen their clinical insight and self-evaluation. The final year emphasizes professional readiness through a supervised Professional Practice Placement and advanced modules including Counselling and Mental Health, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, and Counselling and Psychotherapy for Children and Young People. Additional topics such as Expressive Therapies and Social Justice in Counselling & Psychotherapy allow exploration of diverse therapeutic methods and contexts. By graduation, students are equipped with the theoretical grounding, practical experience, and ethical awareness needed for professional counselling practice and BACP registration.
