COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) Acoustical and Audio Engineering program provides a structured, three-year pathway combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience to prepare students for careers in acoustics and audio engineering. In the first year, students gain a strong foundation in the fundamentals of acoustics, analogue electronics, mathematics for acoustics, and signal chain theory, alongside hands-on learning in the acoustics laboratory and studio production. The second year builds on this knowledge with advanced topics such as digital signal processing, microphone and loudspeaker design, principles of acoustics, and electromagnetism, complemented by industrial studies, career management, and a group design project to enhance teamwork and applied problem-solving skills. The final year focuses on independent research through a major final year project and allows students to specialise by choosing modules from two groups. Options include room acoustics, psychoacoustics and musical acoustics, noise and vibration control, and digital signal processing with machine learning, as well as computer simulation for acoustics, environmental noise measurement and modelling, immersive sound reproduction, and measurement analysis and assessment. The program equips students with technical expertise, analytical skills, and practical experience, enabling them to design, evaluate, and implement acoustic and audio solutions across professional contexts, including architectural acoustics, environmental noise management, product design, and audio production industries.
