COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) International Relations and Politics degree provides students with a comprehensive understanding of global politics, history, and governance. In the first year, students explore international history from 1945 to the present, foundational concepts in international politics, comparative politics, the Cold War, and the role of international organisations. This establishes a strong contextual and theoretical foundation for analysing global political events and structures. In the second year, the focus shifts to contemporary international relations, theories of power and domination, and research methods in politics, alongside a choice of optional modules covering topics such as US foreign policy, terrorism, intelligence and security, political communication, and information warfare. Students may also participate in a University Wide Language program to enhance their global awareness and intercultural competence. The final year is centred on the dissertation, where students undertake independent research, and optional modules allow for further specialisation in areas such as Chinese foreign policy, international political economy, counter-insurgency, social media and digital democracy, intelligence and cyber warfare, global environmental politics, and threats to democracy. Opportunities for placements provide practical experience, preparing students for careers in international organisations, government, diplomacy, research, and related sectors. Graduates develop analytical, research, and communication skills essential for navigating the complex landscape of global politics.
