COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Film Studies degree at the University of Salford offers a comprehensive exploration of cinema, combining historical, theoretical, and practical perspectives to provide students with a well-rounded understanding of film as both an art form and a cultural industry. In the first year, students build a foundation in film analysis and history through modules such as Classical Hollywood Cinema, Film Form, Film Meaning, Film Histories and Film Movements I and II, and Critical Approaches to Film I and II. These modules develop critical thinking skills and provide insight into the evolution of cinematic styles and techniques. The second year focuses on industry-related knowledge and global perspectives, with modules including Film Distribution and Exhibition, Film Journalism, Cinema Asia, Comedy and British Cinema, Contemporary American Cinema, and British Cinema, allowing students to explore the production, dissemination, and reception of films across different cultures. In the final year, students complete a core dissertation alongside optional modules such as Sequential Art, Hollywood Masculinities, Film Programming and Curating for Cinemas and Festivals, Alternative, Independent, and Marginal Film, and Film and Theory. These opportunities enable students to specialise in areas of interest while developing advanced research, analytical, and practical skills. By the end of the degree, graduates are well-prepared for careers in film production, criticism, curation, programming, and other roles within the creative industries.
