COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Literature degree offers students a comprehensive study of literary texts, genres, and traditions, developing critical thinking, analytical, and research skills over three years. In the first year, students build a strong foundation with modules such as Critical Skills in the Twenty-First Century, Discovering Literature, Five Novels, and Popular Fictions, focusing on developing close reading, interpretation, and analytical abilities. The second year expands students’ literary knowledge with core modules covering The Romantic Period: the Sublime and the Gothic and Victorian Literature: Progress and Panic, while offering optional modules including Literature, Adaptation and the Screen, 21st Century Women’s Writing, Introduction to Children’s Literature, Analysing Media Texts, The Female Gothic, World Literature and the Environment, and work placements, allowing students to explore diverse literary forms and contexts. In the final year, students engage with advanced literary study through modules in Modernism and Postmodernism, alongside optional modules such as Dissertation, Teaching Masterclass, Biography: Tradition and Innovation, Visual Text, Rebels, Villains and Discontented Minds, Post/Colonial African Literature, British Theatre Post-1950, Alternative Ulster, and University Wide Language program. By integrating historical, cultural, and theoretical approaches, the course equips graduates with strong analytical, writing, and interpretative skills, preparing them for careers in education, publishing, media, writing, or further research in literature and the humanities.
