COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Language degree provides a comprehensive study of the structure, history, and social context of the English language while developing critical, analytical, and research skills. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules such as Critical Skills in the 21st Century, Introducing Language, Introduction to Stylistics, and Language, Mind and Society. These modules explore the basics of language analysis, its social and cognitive functions, and the tools needed to study language critically. The second year deepens this understanding with modules including History and Diversity in English, Structure of English, Sounds of English, and Truth and Meaning, alongside a range of optional modules such as Language and Big Data, Language Acquisition, Analysing Media Texts, Political Communication, University Wide Language program, and Work Placement, allowing students to tailor their learning to specific interests and gain practical experience. In the third year, students undertake a core Language Project that consolidates their research and analytical abilities, and choose from optional modules including Teaching Masterclass, Northern Voices, Biography: Tradition and Innovation, Language and Communication, and Health Communication. By the end of the program, graduates are equipped with advanced knowledge of English language structure, variation, and use, alongside practical research, communication, and analytical skills applicable to careers in education, media, publishing, communication, and language research.
