COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English and Film degree offers a comprehensive study of literature and film, combining critical analysis with creative understanding. In the first year, students establish foundational skills through modules such as Critical Approaches to Film, Popular Fictions, Film Form, Film Meaning, Classical Hollywood Cinema, and Discovering Literature. These modules introduce students to key concepts, historical developments, and analytical techniques in both film and literary studies. In the second year, students expand their knowledge with core British Cinema studies while choosing from a range of film and English modules, including Cinema Asia, Comedy and British Cinema, Contemporary American Cinema, Film Journalism, The Romantic Period: the Sublime and the Gothic, Literature, Adaptation and the Screen, Victorian Literature, and 21st Century Women’s Writing. This flexibility allows students to tailor their learning to their interests. The third year focuses on advanced and specialised study, with core Postmodernism alongside optional modules such as Hollywood Masculinities, Alternative and Independent Film, Film Programming and Curating, Sequential Art, British Theatre Post-1950, Post/Colonial African Literature, and Dissertation projects. By integrating literature and film studies, the course develops critical thinking, research, and interpretative skills while fostering creativity and cultural awareness. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in media, education, creative industries, and research, with a strong understanding of storytelling and visual culture.
