COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Costume Design degree is structured to build creative, technical, and professional expertise through a progressive three-year curriculum. In the first year, students focus on developing core design and production skills through modules such as Design Principles, Production Skills and Processes for Costume, and Costume Design for Script. They also explore creative and historical influences in Exploring Creative Contexts: Costume Design, while Design Communication and Realisation enhances visual storytelling and presentation abilities. The year concludes with Establishing Professional Practice, introducing industry expectations and workflows. In the second year, students advance their creative practice with modules like Costume Design for Film and TV Production and Costume Design for Theatre, gaining hands-on experience in different media. They continue to strengthen their professional development through Developing Professional Practice and explore contextual understanding in Responding to Creative Contexts: Costume Design. The Design in Practice module allows application of learned techniques to real or simulated projects. In the final year, students refine their craft with Costume for Live Performance and Applied Professional Practice, while undertaking a Negotiated Major Project and an Independent Research Project. These capstone modules encourage originality, critical reflection, and professional readiness for careers in film, theatre, television, and performance industries.
