ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Salford, a public research institution in Salford, Greater Manchester, England, lies 1 mile west of Manchester city centre, occupying 160 acres of parkland along the River Irwell. With 26,155 students in 2023/24, its origins trace back to the Royal Technical Institute, Salford, established in 1896 through the merger of Salford Working Men's College (1858) and Pendleton Mechanics' Institute (1850). The institute, housed in the Peel Building, gained its "Royal" title after an opening ceremony led by the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George V and Queen Mary. Initially focused on industries like mechanical engineering, textiles, and chemistry, it enrolled 1,240 students and employed 19 staff. Renamed the Royal Technical College in 1921, it split in 1958 into two entities, with the breakaway becoming University College Salford by 1992. The main institution became a College of Advanced Technology in 1956 and, following the 1963 Robbins Report, gained university status in 1967 via a Royal Charter presented by Queen Elizabeth II. Clifford Whitworth served as the first Vice-Chancellor, and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was Chancellor until 1991, later visiting the university’s acoustics labs in 2008. The two institutions reunited in 1996. A notable 1960s chemistry tower was demolished in the 1980s due to structural issues. The university has competed on University Challenge, including a 2016 match against the Open University, losing 210 to 115. Today, it remains a significant educational hub, blending historical roots with modern research and academic programs.
