COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Speech and Language Therapy programme provides an integrated curriculum combining clinical training, medical knowledge, linguistics, psychology, and research to prepare students for professional practice as speech and language therapists. The course is structured around core clinical and academic modules that develop both theoretical understanding and practical competence. Clinical Practice modules introduce students to real healthcare environments, where they apply learning with diverse client groups and develop professional skills in line with Health and Care Professions Council standards. Language Acquisition and Processing explores how the human mind develops and processes language, drawing on linguistic and psychological theories. Medicine modules build essential anatomical and neurological knowledge, including brain function and disorders, as well as the structure and function of key speech and hearing systems such as the ear, nose, throat, and related medical specialties. Students also study Speech, Language and Communication modules across different age groups, focusing on evidence-based assessment, diagnosis, and intervention for children and adults with conditions such as autism, aphasia, dementia, and learning disabilities. Foundations of Linguistics, Phonetics and Phonology and Clinical Phonetics and Phonology provide skills in speech analysis and transcription using both perceptual and instrumental methods. Psychology for Speech and Language Therapy develops understanding of cognitive, developmental, and clinical psychology in relation to communication disorders. A major Research and Dissertation project enables students to design and conduct independent research under expert supervision.
