COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc by Research in Entomology provides advanced training in insect science through a combination of practical fieldwork, laboratory study, and independent research. The programme begins with Entomology: Techniques and Identification, where students develop essential hands-on skills in insect collection, preservation, and identification. This includes surveying different habitats, using taxonomic tools, recognising insect-related plant interactions, and building a personal insect collection. The module also strengthens quantitative and analytical abilities needed for experimental design and interpretation of entomological data. Alongside this, Research Skills and Experimental Design equips students with the ability to develop research questions, critically evaluate scientific literature, and choose appropriate field, laboratory, and statistical methods. Through workshops and seminars, students gain experience in data analysis and scientific communication. The final stage of the programme is the Research Project, which allows students to conduct an independent investigation on a specialised entomological topic. This may involve fieldwork, laboratory experiments, or external collaboration. Students design a literature-based research question, collect and analyse data using appropriate statistical tools, and present their findings through both an oral presentation and a journal-style scientific report. Overall, the programme develops strong technical, analytical, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in entomology, ecological research, environmental consultancy, or further academic study such as PhD research.
