COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc by Research in Biomedicine at the University of Reading focuses on developing advanced research capability through a small number of intensive, practice-based modules that prepare students for independent scientific investigation. The programme begins with Project Planning, Laboratory Skills and Experimental Design, where students learn how to design, structure, and execute high-quality biomedical research projects. This includes training in selecting appropriate methodologies, understanding experimental workflows, and applying laboratory techniques relevant to both academic and commercial biomedical research settings. The emphasis is on building strong foundations in experimental planning and technical competence. Another core component is Critical Analysis and Problem Solving, which develops the ability to evaluate current developments in biomedical science, interpret scientific literature, and apply critical thinking to solve complex research problems. Students are encouraged to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory understanding to propose evidence-based solutions to biomedical challenges. The final stage of the programme is the Research Project, where students undertake an extended, independent investigation in a specialised area of biomedicine under academic supervision. This project allows them to apply the skills gained throughout the course to real research questions and generate original scientific findings. Overall, the programme is designed to prepare students for careers in biomedical research, PhD study, or industry-based scientific roles by strengthening both practical laboratory skills and analytical research capabilities.
