COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc by Research in Agricultural Science and Sustainability at the University of Reading is a research-intensive programme designed to prepare students for careers in agricultural, environmental, and agri-science sectors or for progression to doctoral study. It provides a strong interdisciplinary foundation in agriculture, ecology, environmental science, and sustainability, alongside rigorous training in research design, statistical analysis, and scientific methodology. A core component is the extended independent research project, where students investigate a specialist topic in agriculture or sustainability under expert supervision. Complementing this are modules such as Research Skills in Agricultural Sciences and Sustainability, which develops expertise in experimental design, fieldwork methods, and data analysis using R software, and Rethinking Agricultural Systems, which examines global farming systems through ecological, economic, and policy perspectives. Optional modules allow students to tailor their learning, with topics including Agriculture in the Tropics, Climate Smart Agriculture, Horticultural Crop Technology, Integrated Pest Management, and Ecosystem Services and Nature-based Solutions. The programme also offers applied experiences such as Environmental Consultancy, where students work on real-world projects. With access to specialist facilities including research farms, laboratories, and controlled environment systems, students are trained in both field and laboratory contexts. Overall, the course emphasizes critical thinking, applied research skills, and real-world problem solving in sustainable agriculture.
