COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Renewable Energy: Technology and Sustainability curriculum focuses on developing a comprehensive understanding of renewable energy systems, sustainability challenges, and the transition to low-carbon energy solutions. The core modules begin with Renewable Energy 1, which examines solar and wind energy systems, including their technical, environmental, and social challenges, along with barriers to wider adoption. Renewable Energy 2 extends this learning to biomass and hydro energy, analysing their applications and limitations in sustainable energy systems. Urban Energy Systems explores how emerging technologies and smart grids are transforming energy demand and distribution in urban environments, from district to city scale. Energy and the Environment addresses broader issues of energy production and consumption, including environmental impacts, policy considerations, economic factors, and sustainability transitions. Carbon Management and Life Cycle Assessment focuses on strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and assessing environmental impacts across product and system life cycles. The Research Dissertation allows students to conduct independent research using appropriate methodologies to analyse a chosen topic in depth. Optional modules such as Urban Microclimates and Building Energy Management, Energy in Buildings, and Building Simulation provide additional expertise in urban energy dynamics, building performance, and computational modelling using industry-standard tools. Overall, the programme integrates technical, environmental, and policy perspectives to prepare graduates for careers in renewable energy, sustainability, and environmental consultancy.
