COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Language Sciences programme provides an advanced and clinically informed curriculum that integrates linguistics, psychology, neuroscience, and speech and language therapy. The course is designed to develop a deep understanding of how language is acquired, processed, and affected by developmental and acquired disorders. Core study begins with Language Acquisition and Processing, where students explore how individuals develop language and the cognitive mechanisms involved in comprehension and production across different populations. Foundations of Linguistics, Phonetics and Phonology equips students with essential skills to describe and analyse speech and language data, including clinical and typical speech patterns. Neuroscience of Language focuses on the brain basis of language, examining neuroanatomy and neuroimaging techniques used to study language processing in both typical and atypical populations. Students also undertake a Research and Dissertation module, which involves designing and conducting an independent research project in speech and language therapy or a related field, supported by expert supervision. The Introduction to Speech and Language Pathology module provides knowledge of communication disorders in children and adults, alongside assessment and intervention approaches used by professionals. Multilingualism and Impairment across the Lifespan explores language development and disorders in bilingual and multilingual individuals across different age groups. Optional modules such as Placement, Clinical Phonetics and Phonology, and advanced neuroimaging training further enhance practical and research skills. Overall, the programme prepares graduates for clinical, academic, and research careers in language sciences and communication disorders.
