COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Food Security and Development at the University of Reading is an interdisciplinary programme focused on understanding and addressing global food insecurity, poverty, and sustainable development challenges. It combines core training in development theory with applied analysis of food systems to equip students with the skills needed to evaluate and design effective interventions. Theories and Practices of Development provides a strong foundation in international development thinking, particularly around poverty reduction and social justice. Research for Development builds essential skills in designing and conducting applied research, preparing students for both dissertation work and professional careers. A key compulsory module, Food Security and Development, examines the complex relationships between food systems and global development, including production, access, nutrition, and consumption patterns across different regions. The Dissertation allows students to independently explore a specialised topic, applying theoretical and methodological knowledge under academic supervision. Optional modules broaden understanding of related areas such as Poverty, Inequalities and Gender in Development, Global Environmental Change, Justice and Development, Climate Smart Agriculture, and Communication for Development. Additional applied modules like Agricultural Project Planning and Management and Traditional Ecological Knowledge strengthen practical and policy-relevant skills. Overall, the programme develops critical thinking, research capability, and interdisciplinary understanding, preparing graduates for careers in international development organisations, NGOs, policy institutions, and research roles focused on food security and sustainable development.
