COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Food Economics and Marketing at the University of Reading provides advanced training in how economic, marketing, policy, and behavioural factors shape food systems and consumer outcomes. The programme combines core theoretical knowledge with applied research skills to help students understand the full food supply chain, from production to consumption. Central modules include Advanced Marketing, Advertising and Branding, which develops expertise in segmentation, targeting, positioning, pricing, and integrated marketing communications through applied simulations. Research Methods in Economics and Marketing builds strong foundations in designing and conducting original research using quantitative and qualitative techniques. Food Policy and Supply Chain Management examines regulatory frameworks, government intervention, and key issues such as food safety, sustainability, and diet-related health challenges. Consumer Behaviour: Concepts and Theory focuses on understanding how and why consumers make food-related decisions in different contexts. A Dissertation allows students to independently investigate a specialised topic, integrating theory and empirical analysis. Optional modules broaden learning into areas such as Nudge, Motivation and Behaviour Change, Environmental and Resource Economics, Food Security and Global Issues, Global Environmental Change and Justice, Public Policy Economics, Consumers and Markets, and Rethinking Agricultural Systems. Overall, the programme equips graduates with analytical, research, and strategic skills for careers in food marketing, policy, consultancy, and international organisations focused on food systems and sustainability.
