COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Environmental Management at the University of Reading provides an applied and interdisciplinary understanding of environmental systems, combining scientific analysis, fieldwork, and policy-relevant training. The programme equips students with knowledge of environmental and waste management practices in professional contexts, including environmental impact assessment and strategies for reducing pollution and resource use. Students explore ecosystem services and nature-based solutions, gaining insight into conservation, biodiversity management, and sustainable use of natural systems through contemporary research and case studies. Core training in skills for independent learning and research prepares students for postgraduate-level study and supports the development of a major research project. A key feature is the field class, where students undertake hands-on environmental monitoring in a UK national park, applying field techniques to assess human impacts on ecosystems. The research project further develops independent analytical and reporting skills across natural or social science topics. Optional modules broaden expertise in areas such as environmental data analysis, pollution science, air quality management, climate change, soil ecology, environmental consultancy, flood preparedness, and environmental economics. Together, these components build strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills, preparing graduates for careers in environmental consultancy, sustainability management, policy development, and environmental research, with a strong emphasis on real-world application and evidence-based environmental decision-making.
