COURSE CURRICULUM

This programme provides advanced, practice-led training in ecological surveying and consultancy, designed to prepare graduates for professional roles in biodiversity assessment, conservation, and environmental planning. You will develop a strong foundation in molecular methods for species identification, gaining hands-on experience with modern DNA-based techniques that are increasingly used to monitor and verify biodiversity. Field-based modules in botany and animal survey skills build your ability to identify UK plant families, understand vegetation communities using UKHab and NVC frameworks, and apply standard ecological survey methods for fauna assessment. Alongside fieldwork, you will study ecological consultancy practice, including legislation, planning policy, project management, and data gathering processes used in real development projects. Training in GIS, preliminary ecological appraisal, and habitat assessment equips you to evaluate sites for development, biodiversity net gain, and habitat restoration potential. A dedicated consultancy placement preparation module ensures you are ready for professional practice, bridging academic learning with industry expectations. Optional modules include a placement with a professional ecological consultancy, where you contribute to real projects and reports, and a research project allowing deeper investigation into a specialist topic.
