COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Design and Management of Sustainable Built Environments curriculum focuses on sustainable building design, energy efficiency, and environmental performance in the built environment. The compulsory modules begin with Sustainable Design and Management Principles and Practice A and B, which provide a holistic understanding of designing, operating, and managing sustainable and resilient buildings. Students learn to assess building performance and evaluate passive and active systems in terms of their environmental impact. Urban Microclimates and Building Energy Management explores the relationship between urban form, climate, and energy use, focusing on energy monitoring, ICT applications, and strategies for improving urban energy efficiency. Energy in Buildings examines patterns of energy consumption, building energy performance assessment, and policy and socio-technical issues related to reducing energy use and carbon emissions. Building Simulation develops practical skills in using industry-standard software such as Integrated Environmental Solutions to model and optimise building energy performance. The Research Dissertation allows students to investigate a specialised topic using appropriate research methods and analytical techniques. Optional modules include Urban Energy Systems, which studies smart grids and energy transitions at city scale, Energy and the Environment, which covers energy production and sustainability challenges, and Carbon Management and Life Cycle Assessment, which focuses on emissions reduction and environmental impact evaluation. Overall, the curriculum integrates design, engineering, and sustainability to prepare graduates for careers in sustainable building design, energy management, and environmental consultancy.
