COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Communication for Development at the University of Reading is an interdisciplinary programme that explores how communication processes can drive social change and support sustainable development outcomes. It focuses on understanding how communication influences social and technological transformation in development contexts and equips students with the analytical and practical skills needed to design and implement effective communication strategies. Core modules such as Concepts and Practices of Communication examine how communication supports development interventions, while Theories and Practices of Development provides a strong foundation in global development thinking, including poverty reduction and social justice. Research for Development trains students in designing and conducting applied research, preparing them for both academic and professional careers. A major component is the Dissertation, where students independently investigate a topic of interest with academic supervision. Optional modules allow students to specialise in areas such as Food Security and Development, Poverty, Inequalities and Gender in Development, Energy, Climate Change and Development, Development Finance, and Behaviour Change through Nudge Theory. Additional applied modules such as Agricultural Project Planning and Appraisal of Development Projects build practical skills in project design and evaluation, while Traditional Ecological Knowledge explores the link between communication and environmental systems. Overall, the programme develops expertise in communication strategy, development policy, and research, preparing graduates for roles in international development, NGOs, policy, and community-focused organisations.
