COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Cognitive Neuroscience curriculum is designed to provide advanced training in the scientific study of brain function and cognition, with a strong emphasis on empirical research and data analysis. The programme begins with Gathering Data for Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience, where students gain hands-on experience in collecting and analysing neuroscientific data using techniques such as fMRI and EEG, with a focus on reproducible and open science methods. In Analysing Data Using R, students build on prior statistical knowledge to develop advanced data analysis skills using R programming for psychological and neuroscience research. Theories and Models About the Brain explores major frameworks in cognitive neuroscience, encouraging students to critically evaluate animal and human research findings and examine topics such as perception, neurocognitive disorders, emotional processing and lifespan development. Programming for Behavioural and Cognitive Neurosciences develops practical skills in experimental design and coding using tools such as MATLAB, Psychtoolbox and Palamedes to create and run experiments. The Empirical Project allows students to design, conduct and report an independent research study, integrating theoretical and methodological knowledge into practice. In the Research Placement module, students work alongside active researchers, gaining exposure to real research environments and applied scientific challenges. Overall, the curriculum strongly emphasises research competence, statistical analysis, programming skills and experimental design, preparing graduates for doctoral study and research careers in neuroscience and psychology.
