COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Biotechnology programme at the University of Reading offers a comprehensive curriculum that combines advanced biomedical science, data-driven technologies, and commercial understanding of the biotechnology industry. Core modules focus on cutting-edge areas such as cell and gene therapies, including stem cells, gene editing, mRNA-based treatments, CAR-T cell therapies, and tissue engineering approaches used in modern cancer treatment and regenerative medicine. Students also study precision medicine, exploring how genomics and multiomics technologies support personalised healthcare, including pharmacogenomics, biomarkers, and targeted drug therapies. The programme introduces medical technologies, covering diagnostic tools, drug delivery systems, wearable sensors, and assistive healthcare devices used to monitor and treat diseases. A strong emphasis is placed on artificial intelligence and big data in healthcare, where students work with real datasets to develop machine learning models for drug discovery, diagnostics, and clinical decision-making. The commercial side of biotechnology is developed through modules on the business of health and taking drugs to market, delivered jointly with Henley Business School, covering intellectual property, entrepreneurship, clinical trials, regulatory approval, venture capital, and biotechnology business models. Students also complete either a professional placement in industry or an independent research project, gaining hands-on experience in real-world biotechnology environments.
