COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Atmosphere, Ocean and Climate curriculum provides a strong quantitative and computational understanding of the Earth’s climate system, focusing on atmospheric physics, ocean dynamics, and climate modelling. The compulsory modules begin with Fundamentals of Weather and Climate, which introduces thermodynamics and physical principles governing weather systems and climate change. Fundamentals of Modelling and Data Analysis develops skills in numerical and statistical modelling using Python, enabling students to analyse climate data, validate forecasts, and solve simplified governing equations of the atmosphere and ocean. Fluid Dynamics of the Atmosphere and Oceans explores the physics of fluid motion on multiple scales, including the effects of Earth’s rotation, vorticity, and wave dynamics such as Rossby waves. The Dissertation module allows students to conduct independent research in a specialised area of climate science or meteorology. Weather and Climate Discussion provides engagement with real-time global weather events and forecasting analysis. Optional modules deepen expertise in areas such as atmospheric dynamics, tropical and extratropical weather systems, remote sensing, climate change, ocean circulation, air pollution, and numerical modelling for weather and climate prediction. These modules strengthen understanding of both theoretical concepts and applied computational methods used in modern climate science. Overall, the curriculum integrates physics, mathematics, and programming to prepare graduates for research careers in meteorology, climate modelling, environmental science, and data-driven climate analysis.
