COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Applied International Development programme is structured around core compulsory modules and a range of optional modules that together provide a comprehensive understanding of development theory, research, and practice. The compulsory modules include Theories and Practices of Development, which examines key ideas shaping global efforts to reduce poverty and promote social justice, and Research for Development, which trains students in designing and conducting effective research for development contexts. Poverty, Inequalities and Gender in Development focuses on issues of inequality, inclusion, and gender analysis, helping students critically assess development policies and their social impacts. The programme culminates in either a Dissertation, where students independently research a topic of choice under academic supervision, or a Reflective Practice Report, which is based on an applied placement and allows students to integrate theory with professional experience. Optional modules allow students to specialise in areas such as agricultural project planning, development finance, microfinance, communication strategies, human rights law, refugee law, food security, development economics, and international law. These options enable students to tailor their studies according to their interests and career goals. Overall, the programme combines theoretical foundations with practical and policy-oriented learning, preparing graduates for careers in international development, NGOs, government, and policy organisations by developing strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
