COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes Law programme combines advanced research training with specialist legal study, preparing students for doctoral research and careers requiring high-level analytical and investigative skills. The curriculum is centred on a substantial Dissertation, where students design and execute an independent research project, demonstrating expertise in a chosen legal field while critically evaluating its broader legal, political, and societal implications. The compulsory Advanced Research Methods module develops essential skills in research design, methodology, legal theory, academic writing, and PhD proposal preparation. Students can tailor their studies through a diverse range of optional modules spanning international, commercial, corporate, and technology law. Topics include Contemporary Issues in International Law, Human Rights Law, International Refugee Law, International Organisations and Global Governance, and the Law of Armed Conflict, providing insight into global legal challenges and governance structures. Commercially focused modules examine International Banking and Finance Law, International Corporate Governance, International Investment Law and Arbitration, International Commercial Arbitration, Legal Aspects of International Mergers, Acquisitions and Takeovers, and Corporate Rescue. Students interested in emerging legal issues can explore Internet Law and Data Protection and Copyright Law, covering cyber security, artificial intelligence, privacy, and intellectual property.
