COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Architecture (MArch) programme develops advanced architectural design, technical knowledge, and professional skills through a structured progression across design, research, and practice-focused modules. In the early stages, “Architectural Design 1” introduces increasingly complex design projects, where students develop research-driven approaches to site analysis, brief formation, material studies, and precedent investigation, while critically responding to contemporary social, environmental, and architectural challenges. “Architectural Design 2” builds on this foundation by emphasising the application of research methods to create, evaluate, and communicate integrated design proposals that address socio-cultural and environmental issues. “Architectural Technologies” focuses on the technical dimensions of architecture, exploring construction principles alongside environmental, social, and cultural sustainability, with particular attention to resilience and climate change. “Architectural Skills for Professional Resilience” develops understanding of the wider architectural profession, including ethics, legal frameworks, procurement, practice management, and the interdisciplinary nature of the built environment sector. Optional modules allow further specialisation in areas such as construction project management, offsite manufacturing approaches, renewable energy systems, and urban microclimates, enhancing technical and sustainability expertise. In the second year, “Architectural Design 3: Thesis Design” forms a major independent project combining research and design innovation. This is supported by a dissertation in “Research Methods,” allowing exploration of architectural theory, history, sustainability, and design research, alongside “Professional Skills,” which prepares students for real-world architectural practice and industry.
