COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA by Research Philosophy at the University of Reading does not follow a traditional taught-module curriculum; instead, it is structured as a research-intensive programme centred on independent philosophical inquiry. Students design and develop their own research topic under close one-to-one supervision from expert academic staff, with the primary goal of producing an original dissertation. Alongside this supervised research, students participate in a vibrant academic environment that includes weekly seminars, reading groups, lectures, guest speaker events, and staff–student research discussions, where they regularly present and refine their work. Rather than examinations, assessment is based on progressive research outputs such as essays, presentations, and ultimately a substantial dissertation of around 20,000 words. Research training and methodological guidance are embedded within supervision and seminar activities, helping students strengthen their analytical, writing, and critical thinking skills. The programme is designed to prepare students either for doctoral-level study or for careers requiring advanced research and reasoning abilities, while also encouraging deep engagement with philosophical debates and current academic discussions. Overall, the structure is flexible and student-led, focusing on sustained independent study supported by an active research community rather than a fixed set of taught modules.
