COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA English Literature at the University of Reading offers advanced study across a wide historical and thematic range of literary traditions, combining close textual analysis with archival research and contemporary critical theory. The core module Materiality and Textuality develops skills in advanced literary research, including working with manuscripts, bibliographies, editorial practice, copyright issues, and the study of how texts are produced, circulated, and consumed. The Dissertation allows students to complete an independent, in-depth critical project under academic supervision, applying research skills developed throughout the programme. Optional modules enable students to specialise in key areas of literary study, including Modern and Contemporary Literature, Contemporary Literature and Ethnicity, Modern Literary Feminisms, Samuel Beckett, Early Modern Literature, and Romantics and Victorians, offering engagement with texts from the Renaissance to the present day. Additional interdisciplinary options include Publishing and the Business of Books, Emerging Issues in Data Protection and Copyright Law, and Management in Creative and Cultural Industries, which connect literary study to law, business, and publishing sectors. The programme also encourages critical engagement with issues such as identity, culture, gender, and authorship, while developing strong research, writing, and analytical skills. Graduates gain preparation for careers in academia, publishing, media, cultural industries, and further research through a strong foundation in literary scholarship and professional practice.
