COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Classics and Ancient History programme is structured to develop advanced knowledge of the ancient world alongside strong research and analytical skills. Core training begins with “Approaches to the Classical World,” where students engage with key methodologies and theoretical frameworks used across Classics, strengthening their ability to construct well-reasoned arguments both orally and in writing. The “Research Methods” module focuses on postgraduate-level academic skills, including advanced bibliographic research, IT tools, academic writing, and the development of independent research designs, often culminating in tasks such as a book review and project proposal. A major component of the degree is the Dissertation, which allows students to pursue an in-depth study of a topic of personal interest, demonstrating independent judgement, critical thinking, and the ability to construct a coherent scholarly argument using advanced research skills. Language study is also central, with students choosing either Ancient Greek or Latin to support engagement with primary texts. Alongside these core elements, students take Special Option modules tailored to individual research interests, covering diverse themes, periods, and methodologies within Classics. These are typically taught in very small groups, enabling focused discussion and specialist guidance. An optional international study experience further enhances learning through exposure to ancient sites, museum collections, and academic resources abroad, enriching research and disciplinary understanding.
