COURSE CURRICULUM

The LLM International Law curriculum provides a comprehensive and specialised understanding of the international legal system, combining rigorous academic study with advanced research training. The programme begins with Introduction to International Law, which examines the foundations of international law, including treaties, sources of law, state responsibility, legal subjects, and mechanisms for dispute resolution. Students also complete a substantial Dissertation, enabling them to conduct independent research on a specialised topic while developing expertise in legal analysis, research design, and scholarly writing. To support this work, students may undertake Research Methods modules that strengthen their ability to formulate research questions, select appropriate methodologies, and prepare advanced legal research projects. A wide range of optional modules allows students to tailor the degree to their interests. These include Human Rights Law, Policy and Practice; International Refugee Law; The Use of Military Force; and The Law of Armed Conflict, which explore international security, humanitarian protection, and global justice. Modules such as International Organisations and Global Governance and Contemporary Issues in International Law examine the role of international institutions and the legal responses to challenges such as climate change, global health, and cyberspace. Students can also specialise in commercial aspects of international law through International Investment Law and Arbitration and International Commercial Arbitration, while Contemporary Issues in Intellectual Property Law explores current debates surrounding copyright, patents, trademarks, and innovation in a globalised economy.
