COURSE CURRICULUM
BSc Microbiology at the University of Reading is a three-year research-led degree that provides an in-depth understanding of microorganisms and their importance in human health, disease, industry, agriculture, food production, and the environment. The course combines strong theoretical knowledge with extensive laboratory training, enabling students to develop practical skills in microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, immunology, and biotechnology. Optional modules allow specialisation in areas such as medical genetics, marine biology, ecology, anatomy and physiology, and computational biology. In the final year, students undertake an independent research project under academic supervision, providing valuable hands-on experience in experimental design, laboratory investigation, data analysis, and scientific communication. Core modules explore pathogens, microbial biotechnology, and the applications of microbiology in medicine, agriculture, environmental management, and industry. Students can further tailor their studies through optional modules covering epidemiology, zoonotic diseases, microbiome research, neuroscience, cancer biology, forensics, cardiovascular biology, protein science, pharmacology, and innovation in healthcare products. The course is taught within the School of Biological Sciences at the Whiteknights Campus and benefits from modern laboratories, strong industry connections, and opportunities for industrial placements, study abroad experiences, and funded research studentships.
