COURSE CURRICULUM

BSc Microbiology with Professional Experience is a four-year degree that combines advanced microbiology education with a year-long professional placement, preparing students for careers in biomedical research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, food safety, environmental science, and industrial microbiology. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in cellular and molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, evolution, ecology, pathology, and physiology. The second year develops specialist knowledge through modules such as Advanced Studies in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Infectious Diseases, Haematology and Immunology, Molecular Microbiology, and Research and Professional Skills, while optional modules allow exploration of areas including medical genetics, bioinformatics, food microbiology, marine biology, ecology, and anatomy. The third year is dedicated to a professional placement year, giving students valuable industry experience and the opportunity to apply academic knowledge in real-world settings. Previous placement providers have included organisations such as GSK, AstraZeneca, and Public Health England. In the final year, students undertake an independent Research Project and study advanced microbiology topics including Pathogens and Applied Microbiology. Optional modules cover areas such as Epidemiology of Zoonotic Diseases, Cancer and Cell Communication, Neuroscience, Gut Microbiota and Health, Forensics, Cardiovascular Biology, Protein Structure and Function, and Innovation and Product Development. The course places strong emphasis on laboratory training, microbial genetics, biochemistry, pathogen biology, immunology, and biotechnology, supported by state-of-the-art facilities in the Health and Life Sciences building. Students also benefit from opportunities for paid vacation research studentships, international research experiences, and strong industry links. Graduates leave with practical laboratory skills, professional workplace experience, research expertise, and a deep understanding of microorganisms and their applications in medicine, agriculture, environmental sustainability, and biotechnology, making them highly competitive for employment or postgraduate study.
