COURSE CURRICULUM

BSc Microbiology with Foundation is a four-year degree that begins with a foundation year designed to prepare students for university-level study and provide a strong scientific background before progressing to the full microbiology programme. During the foundation year, students study biology, chemistry, laboratory techniques, data analysis, scientific communication, research methods, and global health challenges, while developing academic confidence and practical skills. The degree then progresses into advanced microbiology studies, covering cellular and molecular biology, microbial genetics, biochemistry, infectious diseases, immunology, microbiology, ecology, evolution, and biotechnology. Students gain extensive laboratory experience in modern microbiological techniques and learn about bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms, including their roles in health, disease, industry, agriculture, and the environment. The course offers flexibility through optional modules such as Human Pathology, Ecology, Medical Genetics, Bioinformatics, Food Spoilage and Preservation, Marine Biology, Cancer and Cell Communication, Neuroscience, Epidemiology of Zoonotic Diseases, Gut Microbiota and Health, Cardiovascular Biology, and Forensics. In the final year, students undertake an independent Research Project, allowing them to investigate real microbiological challenges and develop advanced scientific research skills. Practical training remains a major focus throughout the programme, with modules such as Pathogens and Applied Microbiology exploring disease-causing microorganisms and the industrial, environmental, and medical applications of microbes. Students have opportunities to undertake year-long industrial placements, research internships, paid summer studentships, and international research experiences. The programme is taught within one of the UK's oldest microbiology departments and benefits from modern facilities in the Health and Life Sciences building, including advanced teaching and research laboratories. Graduates develop strong analytical, laboratory, problem-solving, and research skills that prepare them for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, biomedical research, environmental science, food safety, public health, agricultural microbiology, and scientific consultancy, while also providing an excellent foundation for postgraduate study, research degrees, and specialist professional training in microbiology and related biological sciences.
