COURSE CURRICULUM

BSc Medical Science with Professional Experience is a four-year degree that combines advanced study of medical sciences with a dedicated professional placement year, preparing students for careers in healthcare, biomedical research, medical technology, and related scientific fields. In the first year, students develop a strong foundation in cellular and molecular biology, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, and human pathology, while optional modules introduce topics such as biochemistry, human development, medical robotics, prosthetics, and the physical principles behind medicine. During the second year, students build deeper knowledge of disease mechanisms, genetics, and biomedical research through modules in advanced cellular biology, medical genetics, and research skills, alongside optional studies in immunology, infectious diseases, microbiology, medicines in healthcare, bioinformatics, anatomy and physiology, and medical diagnostic technologies. A key feature of the programme is the Professional Experience Year, where students gain valuable hands-on experience in clinical or healthcare-related settings through the University’s network of healthcare partners, helping them develop workplace skills, professional confidence, and practical understanding of patient care and medical services. In the final year, students complete an independent Research Project under academic supervision, applying laboratory, analytical, and scientific communication skills to real-world medical questions. Students can further specialise through a wide range of optional modules covering cancer biology, endocrinology, neuroscience, cardiovascular disease, diagnostic imaging, radiotherapy, medical imaging, microbiology, gut health, protein science, forensic biology, pharmacology, biotechnology, and healthcare innovation. Throughout the course, students learn how scientific discoveries are translated into clinical practice, exploring both laboratory-based research and frontline healthcare applications. The programme develops strong practical, analytical, and problem-solving abilities through research-led teaching and modern laboratory facilities. Graduates leave with a comprehensive understanding of human health and disease, combined with professional workplace experience, making them well prepared for employment in healthcare organisations, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, medical technology industries, clinical research environments, public health sectors, or postgraduate study in medical and life sciences disciplines.
