COURSE CURRICULUM

BSc Medical Science with Foundation at the University of Reading is a four-year undergraduate degree that includes a Foundation Year followed by three years of Medical Science study. The course is taught at the Whiteknights Campus and is designed for students who want to understand the science behind modern medicine and how scientific discoveries improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. During the Foundation Year, students develop essential knowledge in biology, chemistry, academic skills, scientific communication, data analysis, and laboratory techniques, providing a strong platform for university-level study. In the degree years, students explore cellular and molecular biology, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, pathology, genetics, immunology, infectious diseases, bioinformatics, and the biological mechanisms that cause human diseases. The course combines theoretical learning with practical laboratory experience and research-led teaching delivered by academics actively involved in medical and biological research. Students also gain exposure to areas such as medical imaging, diagnostic technologies, neuroscience, endocrinology, cardiovascular disease, cancer biology, medicines in healthcare, and emerging biomedical innovations. A major feature of the programme is the final-year independent research project, where students apply scientific methods, analyse data, and develop professional research skills under academic supervision. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies towards specific interests including radiotherapy, microbiology, gut health, forensics, and medical technology. Throughout the programme, students build critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and scientific investigation skills that are highly valued by employers. Graduates are well prepared for careers in biomedical and clinical research, healthcare technology, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, diagnostics, public health, clinical trials, and scientific consultancy, while the strong scientific foundation also provides excellent preparation for postgraduate study, including master's degrees, PhDs, and graduate-entry medicine or other healthcare-related professional training pathways.
