COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biological Sciences (including Foundation and Professional Experience variants), Biochemistry, and Biomedical Science degrees at the University of Reading all sit within life sciences but are designed for very different academic and career directions. Biological Sciences is the most flexible and broad option, allowing you to explore life from multiple levels including ecology, evolution, microbiology, animal behaviour, conservation, and human biology; its structure is highly modular, meaning you can keep your studies wide in the early years and later specialise in areas such as marine biology, palaeobiology, computational biology, or environmental conservation, and the Professional Experience version adds a full placement year to build industry exposure. The Foundation Year version is not a separate subject but an entry route that develops core skills in biology, chemistry, and scientific thinking before progressing into the same main degree. Biochemistry is much more molecular and chemistry-driven, focusing on the chemical processes of life such as enzymes, metabolism, proteins, genetics, and cellular signalling, with strong emphasis on disease mechanisms, biotechnology, and laboratory science; its later modules like applied biochemistry, medical genetics, bioinformatics, and advanced cellular biology show it is best suited for students interested in drug discovery, cancer research, or biomedical innovation. Biomedical Science, on the other hand, is more clinically oriented and directly aligned with NHS laboratory careers, being IBMS accredited and developed with healthcare scientists, and it concentrates on pathology, haematology, immunology, infectious diseases, and clinical diagnostics, preparing students for HCPC registration and work in hospital or diagnostic labs. While Biological Sciences is exploratory and flexible, Biochemistry is molecular and research-focused, and Biomedical Science is professionally targeted toward healthcare diagnostics. The key difference lies in purpose: Biological Sciences builds broad scientific understanding of life, Biochemistry explains life at a chemical and molecular level, and Biomedical Science applies biological knowledge directly to human disease diagnosis and clinical practice, so your choice depends on whether you prefer flexibility, laboratory research, or a defined healthcare career pathway.
