COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biochemistry with Professional Experience at the University of Reading is structured to progressively build knowledge from fundamental life sciences to advanced research and applied biotechnology, while also including a dedicated year of industry experience. In the first year, students study core compulsory modules such as Fundamentals of Microbiology, which introduces bacteria, viruses, fungi, archaea, and protists along with their roles in disease, ecology, and antimicrobial resistance; Anatomy and Physiology, which explains the structure and function of major human body systems; Fundamentals of Biochemistry, focusing on enzymes, metabolic pathways, and biochemical regulation; Cellular and Molecular Principles of Life, which explores cell structure and diversity across organisms; and General Chemistry B, which provides essential chemical principles relevant to biological systems. Optional first-year modules may include evolution, the history of life on Earth, and human pathology, helping students broaden their biological understanding. In the second year, learning becomes more specialised through modules such as Advanced Studies in Cellular and Molecular Biology, which examines molecular mechanisms of cellular function; Research and Professional Skills, which develops scientific communication and data analysis abilities; Medical Genetics, focusing on genetic diseases and inheritance patterns; Applied Biochemistry: from Disease to Diagnostics, which links biochemical pathways to health and disease; and Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, which introduces programming, algorithms, and computational tools used in modern biology. Optional modules include molecular microbiology, infectious diseases, haematology and immunology, and integrated anatomy and physiology, allowing students to focus on medical, laboratory, or research-oriented pathways. A key feature of this programme is the Professional Experience Year, where students spend a full year working in industry, gaining real-world experience in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or related sectors. In the final year, students complete advanced study through compulsory modules including a Research Project, Integrated Biochemistry, and Advanced Research Techniques, where they apply laboratory and data analysis skills to real scientific problems. Optional modules in this year expand into specialised fields such as neuroscience, cancer and cell communication, cardiovascular biology, epidemiology of zoonotic diseases, forensics, applied microbiology, evolution in health and disease, innovation and product development, venoms and poisons, and microbiology field studies. Overall, the programme is designed to integrate molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, and computational science with practical industry exposure, preparing graduates for careers in biomedical research, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and scientific innovation.
