The BSc Biochemistry with Foundation at the University of Reading is a four-year degree designed to support students who need an additional year of preparation before progressing into full undergraduate study. The foundation year focuses on building essential scientific knowledge and academic skills needed for success in biochemistry and related life science degrees. Students begin with Foundation Biology 1, which introduces the molecular building blocks of life, cellular machinery, and major physiological systems, alongside practical laboratory and data interpretation skills. This is developed further in Foundation Biology 2, which explores evolution, homeostasis, microbial systems, and biotechnology applications while strengthening practical and analytical abilities. Foundation Chemistry 1 provides core chemical principles, including molecular structure, reactions, and how chemical behaviour explains biological processes. Alongside these science modules, students take Academic and Scientific Skills modules focused on tackling global challenges, where they develop numeracy, communication, teamwork, research, and digital literacy skills, including responsible use of tools such as AI, all framed around real-world issues like sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. After completing the foundation year, students progress into the main Biochemistry degree, starting with first-year core modules such as Fundamentals of Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, Fundamentals of Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Principles of Life, and General Chemistry B, which together build a strong grounding in biological, chemical, and cellular sciences. Optional modules at this stage include evolution, history of life on Earth, and human pathology. In the second year, students move into more advanced topics such as cellular and molecular biology, medical genetics, applied biochemistry linking disease to diagnostics, bioinformatics and computational biology, and research skills development, with optional study in areas like infectious diseases, molecular microbiology, and immunology. The final year focuses on independent scientific work through a Research Project, Integrated Biochemistry, and Advanced Research Techniques, alongside optional specialist modules covering neuroscience, cancer biology, cardiovascular biology, epidemiology, forensics, applied microbiology, evolution in health and disease, venoms and poisons, and innovation in product development. Overall, the programme provides a structured pathway from foundational science to advanced research and applied biomedical knowledge, preparing graduates for careers in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, research, and related scientific industries.
