COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Accounting and Business (Flying Start Degree Programme) is a four-year professional accounting degree that combines academic study with extensive paid work placements, preparing students for a fast-track route to becoming a Chartered Accountant. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation in accounting, business, sustainability, law, assurance, risk management, and data analytics. They learn double-entry bookkeeping, financial statement preparation, business performance analysis, statistical techniques, data visualisation, ethics, and the legal principles relevant to commercial organisations. Year 2 develops technical accounting and professional skills through modules in assurance, financial reporting, taxation, business strategy, leadership, communication, and critical thinking. Students also complete their first ICAEW-approved accounting work placement, gaining practical industry experience. In Year 3, learning advances to more complex areas of accounting and finance, including consolidated financial statements, corporate reporting, financial strategy, risk management, and tax planning. Students further develop professional judgement and advisory skills while undertaking a second work placement that enhances their technical and workplace competencies. The final year focuses on the strategic and ethical dimensions of the accounting profession. Students examine contemporary issues affecting global accounting, investment, and financial management, while developing advanced analytical, leadership, communication, and client advisory skills through case-study-based learning. They learn to evaluate complex business scenarios, interpret financial data, provide strategic recommendations, and address ethical challenges faced by organisations. A third professional work placement allows students to apply their knowledge in real-world accounting environments and further strengthen their professional development. Throughout the programme, sustainability, ethics, digital strategy, corporate reporting, taxation, assurance, and business performance remain central themes, ensuring graduates possess both technical expertise and commercial awareness. The degree is designed to align closely with ICAEW professional requirements, enabling students to gain valuable credits towards future chartered accountancy qualifications while building extensive practical experience, leadership capabilities, problem-solving skills, and a strong understanding of modern business operations.
