COURSE CURRICULUM

BSc Zoology at the University of Reading is a specialised three-year degree that provides an in-depth study of animal life, covering evolution, anatomy, physiology, behaviour, ecology, biodiversity, conservation, and animal-environment interactions. Unlike many biological sciences degrees, students begin studying zoology from the first year, developing a strong foundation through modules such as Animal Form and Function, Cellular and Molecular Principles of Life, Fundamentals of Evolution, Fundamentals of Ecology, History of Life on Earth, and Our Changing Planet. These modules help students understand how animals have evolved, how their bodies function, how ecosystems operate, and how environmental change affects biodiversity. In the second year, students advance their knowledge through Comparative Vertebrate Zoology, Invertebrate Zoology, and Quantitative and Professional Skills, gaining practical experience in animal identification, anatomy, dissection techniques, statistical analysis, GIS mapping, and scientific data interpretation. A wide range of optional modules allows students to tailor the degree towards their interests, including Animal Behaviour, Marine Biology and Conservation, Advanced Ecology, Conservation Science in Practice, Palaeobiology, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, and international biodiversity field courses. The final year centres on an independent Research Project where students undertake original scientific investigation under academic supervision, while optional modules explore specialist topics such as Epidemiology of Zoonotic Diseases, Ecology of Urban Areas, Evolution in Health and Disease, Forensics, Venoms and Poisons, Marine Biology Field Course, and Palaeoecology Research Field Course in Canada. The programme combines laboratory work, field studies, museum-based learning through the Cole Museum of Zoology, and hands-on practical training, enabling students to develop strong scientific, analytical, and research skills. Graduates gain expertise in animal biology, wildlife conservation, ecological monitoring, biodiversity management, and zoological research, preparing them for careers in zoology, wildlife conservation, environmental consultancy, ecological research, animal welfare, government agencies, conservation organisations, museums, education, and postgraduate study. The course also provides eligibility for membership of the Royal Society of Biology and a pathway towards Chartered Biologist status, making it an excellent choice for students passionate about understanding and protecting animal life.
