COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Sociology programme at the University of Reading provides a comprehensive understanding of the social processes, structures, and inequalities that shape contemporary societies. In the first year, students explore key sociological concepts through modules such as Contemporary Social Problems, Thinking Sociologically, Gender, Race and Class: Social Differentiation and Stratification, and British Society. These modules examine social change, inequality, multiculturalism, crime, media, and the relationship between citizens, institutions, and the state. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of sociological research and theory through Research Methods and Sociological Theory, developing skills in research design, ethics, and critical analysis of classical and contemporary sociological perspectives. The Identity Politics module examines how identities are formed, maintained, and challenged, while exploring issues of power, oppression, and social movements at local and global levels. Throughout the programme, students engage with topics such as gender, race, class, inequality, criminal justice, religion, and social policy, drawing on insights from related disciplines including criminology, psychology, history, law, and politics. In the final year, students undertake a Dissertation in Sociology, conducting independent research on a topic of their choice under academic supervision. This project develops advanced skills in literature review, data collection and analysis, critical thinking, and the application of sociological theories and methods to real-world social issues, preparing graduates for diverse professional and academic careers.
