COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Psychology with Criminology degree at University of Reading combines psychological science with criminological and criminal justice studies to explain behaviour in the context of crime, punishment, and social systems. In the first year, students study core psychological foundations through modules such as Introduction to Psychological Research, Learning about Learning, The Person and the Brain, and Debates in Mental Health, alongside criminology-focused modules including Introduction to Criminology and Introduction to Criminal Justice. This establishes an understanding of research methods, cognition, neuroscience, mental health, and the structures of the justice system. In the second year, learning becomes more advanced and integrative through Research Methods in Psychology, Development Across the Lifespan, Social Psychology and Individual Differences, and Cognitive and Biological Psychology, alongside Advanced Criminological Theory and Contemporary Issues in Criminal Justice. These modules develop deeper insight into behaviour, development, social influence, and systemic responses to crime. In the final year, students complete an independent psychology project involving full research design and analysis, while also studying Applied Forensic Psychology and Criminology and Forensic Psychology: Applying Theory and Practice, which apply psychological theory to real-world offending behaviour and legal decision-making. The programme develops strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, preparing graduates for careers in psychology, criminal justice, forensic practice, and related professional or academic pathways.
