COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Psychology and Language Sciences degree at the University of Reading offers a detailed, interdisciplinary study of the human mind, language, and communication disorders. In the first year, students take core modules such as Debates in Mental Health, which examines psychological disorders, their assessment, and evidence-based interventions, and Introduction to Psychological Research, which builds skills in both quantitative and qualitative research design and analysis. Learning about Learning explores memory and learning theories, while The Person and the Brain introduces core concepts in psychology including neural and hormonal systems, genetics, personality, and group behaviour. Language-focused modules include Language in the Brain, which examines how language is processed and represented neurologically, and Introduction to Linguistics, covering grammar, semantics, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge through Linguistics 2, Cognitive and Biological Psychology, Development Across the Lifespan, Research Methods in Psychology, Social Psychology and Individual Differences, and Professional and Clinical Practice, which includes a placement to build employability skills. In the final year, students study Introduction to Speech and Language Pathology and Neuroscience of Language, focusing on communication disorders and advanced neurocognitive research, before completing an independent research Project. This structure builds strong analytical, scientific, and practical skills for careers in psychology, linguistics, and clinical or research settings.
