COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Planning and Geography programme at the University of Reading provides an interdisciplinary understanding of how spatial, economic, legal, and environmental processes shape the built and natural world, with a strong emphasis on sustainable development and real-world problem solving. In the first stage, students study core modules such as Global Challenges: A Planet in Crisis, Introductory Economics for Business and Finance, Property, Law, Rights and Institutions, Geographical Imaginaries, Contemporary Issues in Real Estate and Planning, and Ethics and Sustainable Development. These modules introduce key debates around climate change, inequality, property systems, urban development, and environmental responsibility while building foundational analytical skills. In the second stage, students deepen their expertise through Real Estate and Urban Economics, Skills Training and Project Design, Geography and Planning Field Class, Planning Theory and Practice, and Encountering Political Geographies, which together develop research skills, fieldwork competence, and critical understanding of planning systems and political space. In the final stage, students complete a dissertation alongside Real Estate Development Process, enabling them to undertake independent research into planning and development challenges. Across the degree, students examine issues such as housing, sustainability, land use, and urban growth while learning how planning decisions shape societies and environments. The programme equips graduates with strong analytical, economic, legal, and spatial skills for careers in planning, real estate, development, policy, and sustainability-focused professions.
