COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Pharmacology degree at the University of Reading provides a structured and applied training in drug science, human biology, and clinical pharmacology. In the first year, students study core modules such as Fundamentals of Cell Biology, which covers mammalian cell structure, biochemical pathways, and therapeutic targets, and Fundamentals of Pharmaceutical Science, which explores how medicines are sourced, developed, and manufactured with attention to patient safety and quality control. Principles of Drug Action introduces how drugs affect the human body and the processes involved in drug discovery and delivery. Students also take Mathematics and Statistics for Pharmacology to build essential quantitative skills, alongside Anatomy and Physiology, which explains the structure and function of major human body systems. Key Skills for Pharmacology develops laboratory competence through practical experiments, while Placement Support 1 prepares students for future industry experience. In the second year, students progress to Molecular Drug Targets, Drug Design and Delivery, Haematology and Immunology, Medicines in Healthcare, and Integrated Anatomy and Physiology, all of which deepen understanding of disease systems and therapeutic approaches. Mathematical Modelling for Pharmacology strengthens data analysis and modelling skills, supported by Placement Support 2. In the final year, students complete a Research Project involving original laboratory work, alongside Clinical and Societal Impact of Pharmacology, which examines drug use, ethics, and healthcare applications in real-world contexts.
