COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Meteorology and Climate programme at the University of Reading provides a comprehensive, science-based education in atmospheric and climate systems, combining physics, mathematics, and environmental science with practical and research training. In the early stages, students study core modules such as Introduction to Meteorology, Physics of the Natural World, Weather and Climate Fundamentals, and Skills for Environmental Science, which introduce atmospheric structure, weather systems, scientific instrumentation, programming, and data analysis. Mathematical foundations are strengthened through Calculus and Linear Algebra, supporting advanced scientific problem-solving. In later years, students progress to advanced modules including Climate Change, Atmospheric Physics, Atmosphere and Ocean Dynamics, Numerical and Statistical Methods, and Mathematical Methods for Weather and Climate, which deepen understanding of global climate systems, fluid dynamics, radiation processes, and modelling techniques. Optional modules allow specialization in areas such as remote sensing, space weather, ocean circulation, boundary layer meteorology, and numerical weather prediction. A key feature of the programme is the Undergraduate Research Project, where students independently investigate a topic with academic supervision, developing strong analytical and communication skills. Practical learning is supported through laboratory work, field trips, and computer-based modelling. Overall, the degree prepares students for careers in meteorology, climate science, environmental consultancy, data science, and further research in atmospheric and Earth system sciences.
