COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Mathematics degree at the University of Reading provides a structured progression from foundational mathematical theory to advanced analysis and applied problem-solving. In the first year, students study Real Analysis I, covering core concepts such as inequalities, sequences, series, and functions, alongside Calculus, which extends knowledge into multiple dimensions and introduces differential equations and computational applications. Foundations of Mathematics develops essential skills in sets, functions, number systems, and mathematical proof, while Linear Algebra focuses on systems of equations, matrices, eigenvalues, and eigenvectors. Probability and Statistics introduces key ideas in probability distributions, statistical inference, regression, and hypothesis testing. Mathematical Communication supports clear and logical expression of mathematical reasoning. In the second year, students advance to Differential Equations, exploring ordinary and partial differential equations and their applications, and Algebra, which introduces abstract structures such as groups, rings, and fields. Real Analysis II deepens understanding of continuity, differentiation, and integration in one and several variables, while Mathematical Modelling and Professional Skills develops applied problem-solving, teamwork, and communication abilities. In the final year, students complete a Portfolio of Projects, undertaking independent mathematical or statistical investigations that integrate and apply the knowledge and skills developed throughout the degree, preparing them for further study or professional careers in mathematics and related fields.
